FATAL TRAFFIC COLLISION

On May 27, 2016 at approximately 4:25 p.m., the Corona Police Department and Corona Fire Department responded to the area of Hidden Valley east of the I-15 Freeway, reference a severe injury related traffic collision. Two motorcycles, one being ridden by Philip Borja (25 years of Upland) and the other being ridden by Zachariah Macias (24 years of Norco) were both traveling eastbound on Hidden Valley from the I-15 freeway in the #1 lane of travel. Debbie Ward (57 years of Norco) was driving a white Ford Fusion exiting the Stater Brothers shopping center parking lot preparing to make a left turn onto westbound Hidden Valley. As the Ford Fusion entered the roadway, it entered into the path of travel of the two motorcycles, and Philip Borja struck the driver’s side of the Ford Fusion. Zachariah Macias took an evasive action to avoid colliding with the Ford Fusion, and was forced to drive eastbound in the westbound lanes of travel on Hidden Valley. Both motorcycles ended up striking a Volkswagen Beetle being driven by Marissa Frantz (22 years of Corona) westbound on Hidden Valley in the #1 lane of travel. As a result of this secondary collision, Philip Borja’s motorcycle and the Volkswagen Beetle both caught fire in the westbound lanes of travel on Hidden Valley.

Both Philip Borja and Zachariah Macias were transported to Riverside Community Hospital for serious injuries. Neither Debbie Ward nor Marissa Frantz received injuries from this incident. Zachariah Macias was treated and ultimately released from the hospital. Philip Borja died at the hospital from the injuries he received from this traffic collision. Philip Borja was an off duty Los Angeles Sheriff Department Deputy assigned to the Norwalk station.

At this time, there have been no arrests and no one has been cited. This traffic collision is being investigated by the Corona Police Department’s Collision Response Team. If anyone has information about this investigation please contact Traffic Investigator Clark Eveland at (951) 817- 5764, or e-mail at [email protected]
