Advisory

Scam reported.

On May 29th, 2016 a report was filed in reference to a scam. The victim received a phone call from someone claiming to be a relative which had been locked up in another state. The caller claimed to have laryngitis and could not speak well so a third party, claiming to be an attorney spoke to the victim. The callers requested $3,000 dollars on a OneVanilla prepaid card for bail money. The victim agreed and purchased the card and called them back with the card information. The attorney stated the relative had been to court and was assigned community service or pay another $2,000. The victim purchased another card and called them back again. Once again the victim was contacted and asked for money to fly home. The victim was out another $3,000. These subjects use burner phones that are not traceable. They pull the money from the cards and transfer to an online back account and bounce the money around several times. Please do not become a victim. Call your local law enforcement to ask for assistance and to verify a family or friend being confined. Never send money through prepaid cards or wire transfer as bail money.
