Chula Vista Library Hosts "Read for the Win!" Summer Reading Program June 4 Through July 22
The Chula Vista Public Library is hosting its annual Summer Reading Program for kids, teens and adults. “Read for the Win!” follows a Summer Olympics theme, and will run from Saturday, June 4 through Friday, July 22. All library cardholders are invited to sign up online at www.chulavistalibrary.com or in person at any of the three library branches. Participants can read for designated lengths of time, and receive a prize at each level. Family members are also encouraged to read to those unable to read yet.
Each library branch has scheduled a wide variety of entertaining and educational activities for various age groups. Summer Reading Program events are free of charge and open to the public. Highlights include magicians, musical performances, craft sessions, story times, fitness programs, painting classes, interactive shows with musical instruments, S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) activities, and much more. Among the programs are One World Rhythm, Literature Comes to Life, Arty Loon Magic, USA Jump Start and Mad Science. The South Chula Vista Branch will also host two “Summer Book Camp” sessions to encourage incoming third and fourth graders to continue reading throughout the summer. They are scheduled for Monday through Thursday, June 13-16 and June 20-23; and Tuesday through Thursday, July 5-7 and Monday through Thursday, July 11-14. The Calendar of Events is available in each library and online at www.chulavistalibrary.com. The Friends of the Chula Vista Library and a City of Chula Vista Performing and Visual Arts grant are sponsoring many of the summer events.
In addition, the Civic Center and South Chula Vista library branches will serve free lunches from 12 to 1 p.m. and snacks from 3 to 3:30 p.m. for children ages 1-18, weekdays through July 8. The summer lunch program is sponsored by the U.S Department of Agriculture in conjunction with the Chula Vista Elementary School District. South Bay Community Services will also donate healthy snacks.
Summer Reading Programs are traditional and fun ways for libraries throughout the nation to promote learning and reading over summer school breaks. Studies show that reading inspires creativity and a lifelong love of learning. It also helps children and teens retain and enhance reading skills gained during the school year, and promotes academic success in every area. With teens and adults joining, the Summer Reading Program encourages the entire family to read for pleasure, individually or together.
