At approximately 5:11 this morning, a Motorcycle Enforcement Deputy from the L.A. County Sheriff’s Transit Bureau South, was involved in a traffic collision while traveling Southbound on the 710-Long Beach Freeway, in the City of South Gate.
Preliminary reports are that a traffic collision occurred in front of the deputy and one of the vehicles spun out of control while also traveling South on the 710 Freeway, just North of the Imperial Highway exit. The vehicle then crashed into the center divider directly in front of the Transit Bureau South Motorcycle Enforcement Deputy, who was on his way to begin his duties of patrolling the Metro Expo Line. The Transit Bureau South is one of the bureaus within the Transit Policing Division of the Sheriff’s Department that contracts with LA County Metropolitan Transportation Authority to provide police services to its buses, trains and properties.
The Motorcycle Enforcement Deputy was transported to an area hospital. The deputy was initially reported to have non-life threatening injuries. The condition of the other drivers was not immediately known. The identities of the deputy nor the other drivers are being released at this time.
The California Highway Patrol will be handing the investigation into the traffic collision as well as the LA County Sheriff’s Traffic Services Detail. Anytime a member of the Sheriff’s Department is involved in a traffic incident of any kind, the Traffic Services Detail conducts an independent investigation.
