Miami County – Recently, two separate traffic stops resulted in  Amanda Adams, 28 , Lyons, IN and Rebecca Shaffer, 34, Peru, IN being arrested for two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (with a passenger under 18) and two counts for neglect of a dependent. Adams faces additional charges for possession of marijuana, possession of a scheduled IV narcotic, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Shaffer faces an additional count for disorderly conduct.

June 3rd, at approximately 6:25 p.m., Indiana State Police Trooper Steven Glass stopped a 2012 Dodge passenger car for allegedly exceeding the posted speed limit on U.S. 31 near Miami County Road 100 North. As Trooper Glass was speaking with the driver, identified as Adams, he observed indicators of possible criminal activity. Trooper Ben Reason, and his narcotic detecting police dog, Cartoush, arrived to assist. Trooper Reason utilized Cartoush for a free air sniff around the Dodge. The dog indicated the presence of illegal narcotics inside the car. During a subsequent search of the Dodge, officers allegedly found marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and various pills. Further investigation purportedly revealed that Adams was driving while under the influence of marijuana. She also had two children, ages one and three, inside the car. Adams was incarcerated in the Miami County Jail. The children were released into the care of a family member.

June 6^th, at approximately 8:20 p.m., Trooper Glass, at the request of a Bunker Hill Police Officer, initiated an impaired driving investigation on Shaffer. The Bunker Hill Officer had stopped a 2015 Dodge passenger car that Shaffer was driving, for an alleged traffic infraction near Warhawk and Shaw Avenue, in Peru. Shaffer also nearly hit another vehicle. Further investigation by Trooper Glass, revealed that Shaffer was allegedly over the .08 blood alcohol concentration limit in which a driver is considered intoxicated in Indiana. During the investigation, Shaffer was allegedly abusive towards officers. She also allegedly kicked and spit, repeatedly, at the windshield of Trooper Glass’s police car. Shaffer was eventually shackled and made to wear a spit mask. She had to be transported to the Miami County Jail by a Peru Police officer who had a car with a transport cage. Shaffer also had two children, ages seven and ten, in the car. They were released into the care of a family member.
