Michigan Ave Construction Update - crews are mandated by MDOT to stop work during MIS Race Weekend.
Another week down and closer to project completion. Hoffman Bros. continues to move forward – full steam ahead. The City and Hoffman Bros. continue to work with MDOT to make modifications to the detour routes as the project progresses. We are aware that there are still some areas of the detour that are not operating as smoothly as we all would like. Please know that work continues to develop solutions to the challenges caused by the detour route.
Note: The construction crews are mandated by MDOT rules to stop work on Thursday morning of an MIS race weekend and they cannot return until Monday night. This means that there will not be any work occurring from Thursday, June 9th through Monday, June 13th; with work starting back up on Tuesday, June 14th.
Week of June 14th
Traffic Information
Hoffman Bros. will be closing the S. Lewis Street / US-12 intersection intermittently to install storm sewer and water main this coming week. Please pay attention to the signage regarding when S. Lewis is opened and closed, as there will not be a new detour route posted for this.
MDOT and Hoffman Bros. continue to work on smoothing out the wrinkles of the detour route. Please note the right lane is RIGHT TURN ONLY at northbound Old Creek Drive and Michigan Avenue (next to Dairy Queen). You need to be in the left lane if you want to proceed north onto Maple.
A friendly reminder – City staff encourages everyone to slow down, be patient and obey the traffic signs. In addition, please do not take short-cuts through private property in an attempt to avoid the current traffic shifts/detour routes, as it is illegal and unsafe. And please pause to let people out of their driveways.
Pedestrian Traffic
Regarding pedestrian traffic, there are parts of the construction zone that are not open to pedestrian traffic. For example, the walkway in front of Oakwood Cemetery on the Michigan Ave side is not open to pedestrian traffic; there are signs in place that say sidewalk closed. There are also signs designating alternate pedestrian routes throughout the construction zone. Please obey the signs and seek alternate pedestrian routes that don’t include walking down the middle of re-routed traffic lanes.
Construction Activities
Hoffman Bros. will be installing new storm sewer from Lewis east towards Ann Arbor Street and from Harris Street west towards Ann Arbor Street. Work on signal pole foundations for Harris Street will continue.
Water main work will resume progressing from Monroe Street towards Ann Arbor Street. Notices will be distributed to affected water customers as the work moves forward. Also, sanitary sewer work is a possibility later in the week next week.
Please stay tuned for updates as the Michigan Ave project progresses. The City of Saline staff will be providing a minimum of a weekly update and sometimes daily informational postings depending on what is taking place in the construction zone.
Remember to visit our local Saline businesses during and after this great project and look for the Pave It Forward logo and the fun promotions being provide by Saline Main Street and the Saline Area Chamber of Commerce.
