FRAUD FRIDAY--Phishing Scams
Two weeks ago the Fraud Friday message referenced an office supply scam involving the fraudulent billing practices of office supply companies who billed unsuspecting companies for products they did not order. This week, an Anacortes resident called police when they received an email from an entity claiming to represent Apple Technology Company with an invoice for $93 in the body of the email. The astute recipient did not offer any information and reported it for information only.
This incident is a classic example of phishing which targets consumers online with emails or pop-ups that appear to be from a trusted company or source, in this case Apple Technology Company.
Your response to this type of scam should be simple--do not respond to them or even open them if it is from a source you do not trust. If you think your bank or other trusted organization is trying to reach you, contact them via phone or email addresses you have on file, not by contact information provided in the phishing email.
Finally, you can report phishing emails to [email protected] or [email protected], which is a multi-disciplinary anti-phishing group that fights phishing scams.
