Mother walking her 10-year-old daughter across a street is killed by hit and run driver. Suspect was later arrested.
On June 19, 2016 at approximately 6:39 PM, Covina Police Officers were dispatched to a vehicle vs. pedestrian hit and run investigation in the 1100 block of W. San Bernardino Road. Upon arriving, officers located two victims in the street that had been struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on San Bernardino Road as they were crossing the street. The adult suffered critical injuries and the juvenile suffered moderate injuries. Both victims were transported to a local trauma center where the adult victim later succumbed to her injuries.
Witnesses at the scene indicated that after the suspect vehicle struck the victims, the vehicle continued westbound on San Bernardino, failing to stop to render aid to the victims. The suspect vehicle is described as a brown Nissan Altima.
The driver of the suspect vehicle, Jose Higareda, a 50-year-old resident of Irwindale, later turned himself in at the Covina Police Department at the encouragement of his wife and child who were passengers in his vehicle when he struck the two victims.
Mr. Higareda was arrested on the felony charge of VC 20001 – (Hit and Run with Injuries) and is being housed at the Covina Police Department on $50,000 bail pending his arraignment at Citrus Superior Court on June 21, 2016.
