Severe Weather Possible for Wednesday, Use Caution

Severe weather is possible across much of Indiana Wednesday afternoon and continuing into the evening, and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security reminds Hoosiers to use caution and be prepared.

The National Weather Service has reported that the northern third of the state is at moderate risk for severe weather, north central Indiana along the I-74 corridor faces an enhanced risk and south central Indiana is at slight risk for severe weather. The greatest threats are damaging winds, large hail, heavy rain and tornadoes.

It’s important for Hoosiers to take precautions in advance of severe weather, in the event that immediate action is needed.

· Stay up-to-date on current weather conditions using a weather app, following a local TV or radio station, or visiting a reliable internet source such as www.weather.gov.
· Consider turning up the volume on cell phone notifications. Be familiar with the notification settings of weather apps.
· Keep electronic devices fully charged in case of a power outage.
· Know where to take shelter in the event of severe weather. Residents living in manufactured housing should identify another location to take shelter.
· Do not walk or drive through any flooded areas – it takes only six inches of fast-moving flood water to knock over an adult and only two feet to move a vehicle. If a road is closed, find another route.
· Follow the directions of public safety officials – that includes evacuation orders, road closures or requests to stay at home or stay away from certain areas; public safety officials give orders for public well-being. Follow their guidance.

Weather conditions can change quickly, so it’s important to stay up-to-date on current weather conditions, prepare for the possibility of severe weather and exercise caution.
