ISP Investigating Police Action Shooting in Greendale-*UPDATE*
Greendale-The Indiana State Police and the Greendale Police Department continue to investigate an armed robbery and police action shooting the occurred in Greendale, Indiana last night.
The investigation now indicates that at approximately 11:00pm on July 1st, Richard McCracken, age 30, Lawrenceburg, Indiana allegedly approached two people in the parking lot of the Burger King Restaurant located at 702 Lorey Lane and brandished a large knife. He forced them to the door of the restaurant where another employee was forced to open the locked door, allowing him to enter. While inside the restaurant, McCracken allegedly forced employees to open a safe. McCracken stole an undetermined amount of money from the safe and fled on foot. While fleeing, McCracken allegedly kicked a female, causing serious injuries to her foot.
The investigation then determined that at approximately midnight, Officer Joseph Vance, a 12 year veteran of the Greendale Police Department located McCracken in a wooded area nearby. McCracken, who was still in possession of a large knife, allegedly advanced towards Officer Vance with the knife raised. Officer Vance discharged his service handgun twice, striking McCracken with both shots. Officer Vance along with other officers administered first aid to McCracken before he was flown to the University of Cincinnati for treatment. McCracken’s injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
Per Greendale Police Department SOP, Officer Vance has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
This afternoon, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Richard McCracken. McCracken was charged with the following charges:
1 Count-Robbery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury-Level 2 Felony
3 Counts-Kidnapping-Level 3 Felony
1 Count-Attempted Aggravated Battery-Level 3 Felony
4 Counts-Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon-Level 5 Felony
1 Count-Theft (over $750)-Level 6 Felony
Upon being released from the hospital, McCracken will be extradited back to Dearborn County, Indiana to face the charges in this case.
