INCREASED SCAM ALERT TO LAKE LURE RESIDENTS
The Lake Lure Police Department would like to alert its residents of an increase of SCAM calls. These callers are claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service and have been threatening and intimidating. Caller ID’s from these calls have come from many different area codes throughout the United States, however be assured these calls go through a routing system and most possibly are originating from outside the United States, which the callers know will most likely keep them from being prosecuted. Today alone we’ve received numerous complaints of these callers.
Do not entertain these callers and do not speak about anyone in your household or release any information they require.
We also have had a report where one of our residents received a call from who he believed to be his granddaughter. The caller claimed she needed money to get out of jail. She asked the resident to go purchase several thousands of dollars of gift cards/itune cards. Unfortunately, the resident was out hundreds of dollars before the scam could be stopped.
The United States has been hit hard with many scams. These are just a couple.
The best thing we can do is to educate ourselves. If you receive a call that you feel is a scam, give them no information and don’t entertain the caller. Hang up. If they continue to call, call your local police department.
We at the Lake Lure Police Department want to keep our public informed of these increasing calls to our area.
