Chula Vista Library Offers LED Light Bulbs for Checkout.
Thinking about upgrading your lighting to energy efficient LED bulbs to save energy and money? Try before you buy! The Chula Vista Public Library is offering a variety of energy efficient LED light bulbs for checkout with your library card.
Through the Cities-Local Government Partnership with San Diego Gas and Electric, the Civic Center Library Branch, 365 F Street, has nine LED bulbs available for a seven-day checkout. Bulbs must be checked out and returned to the library's Information Desk. The program is a pilot to evaluate community interest in this service and if successful will be expanded to include more bulbs and more City library locations.
Different bulb types are made for different uses in the home, and this program gives the public an opportunity to find the most efficient types for any area of the home. Available energy saving bulbs are Classic Soft White and Daylight, Reflector Soft White and Daylight (typically for recessed “can” fixtures), Globe Soft White and Daylight, and Candelabra.
Depending on the bulbs, lighting can account for 20% of a typical California home's energy use, and replacing incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs can significantly reduce a home's energy consumption. While LED bulbs may cost more to buy, residents should ultimately see significant savings of more than $11 each year for each standard 75 watt bulb they replace. Upgrading to LED bulbs can also help the City’s entry in the $5 million Georgetown University Energy Prize (www.chulavistaca.gov/energyprize).
For more information about the bulbs themselves, please call the City of Chula Vista’s Conservation Section at (619) 409-3893. For information about the bulb checkout process, please call the library at (619) 691-5069.
