Task Force Created to Make Sure Parolees and Probationers Abide by Sentences
Howard County – Indiana State Police Peru Post Commander Lt. Jeremy Kelly, Kokomo Police Chief Robert Baker, and Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers have dedicated officers to team up with the Indiana Department of Correction Parole Division and the Howard County Probation Department. Probation and parole officers requested the three police departments dedicate resources to assist in parole and probation sweeps in Howard County.
In April 2016, the five agencies formed a part time task force dubbed “the Howard County Probation and Parole Project (HCP3).” The goal is to hold probationers and parolees accountable to the strict guidelines of their probation or parole agreement. When probation and parole officers conduct home compliance checks, they can request the assistance of police officers. If evidence of a new crime is discovered during the home check, police officers will arrest the offender and secure any evidence discovered.
Through June 30, officers assigned to HCP3 have assisted with 57 probation and 10 parole checks. Those checks resulted in 31 people being arrested on 51 new felony charges and 14 new misdemeanor counts. Officers also seized 14 firearms and $5,000 in United States currency. Six of the new charges were heroin related and 10 were methamphetamine related.
Law enforcement officers encourage anyone with information about the possession, distribution, or manufacturing of narcotics to call their local law enforcement agency or the Indiana State Police Tip Line at 1-800-453-4756. Information can be reported anonymously.
