Los Angeles- On Thursday, July 21, 2016, at approximately 7:10 a.m., a fatal traffic collision occurred at the intersection of 59^th Place and Broadway in Newton Area.

Juana Oxlaj, 36 years old, was pushing her 10 month old baby in a stroller and attempting to cross Broadway westbound at the north crosswalk of 59^th Place.  Midway in the crosswalk, the two were struck by a vehicle making a left turn from 59^th Place to northbound Broadway. The vehicle was a 2002 Chevy Silverado driven by Esteban Carbajal, 38 years old and a resident of Los Angeles.

Oxlaj and her baby were transported to California Hospital Medical Center by paramedics from the Los Angeles City Fire Department. Despite the best efforts from the medical staff, the baby was pronounced dead a short time after arrival.  Mrs. Oxlaj suffered head trauma and listed in stable condition and is expected to survive.

There was no evidence that drugs or alcohol was involved.  Carbajal remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.  He was later released after questioning.  The collision is still under investigation and is being conducted by Central Traffic Division Detectives.
