Trooper Interrupts Armed Robbery-Suspect Wounded After Pointing Gun at Trooper-UPDATE-CORRECTION
Anderson - An armed robbery suspect was wounded with a non-life threatening injury, around 8:20 A.M. this morning, after a trooper walked into a gas station and was informed by clerks that the man just leaving had robbed the station while armed with a handgun.
Sergeant Anthony Emery, a 19 year veteran of the Indiana State Police, was in full uniform when he walked outside the station, located at 53rd and MLK in Anderson, and ordered the suspect, who was getting into a 2002 Jaguar, to stop.
Instead of stopping, the suspect continued to leave, pointing a handgun at Emery out his open car window. Sergeant Emery fired on the suspect, Ricky B. Zimmerman, a white male, age 22 of Pendleton, hitting him through both wrists as he pointed the handgun out the window. Zimmerman’s car continued across MLK Blvd, where it struck a northbound Honda Civic before coming to rest on the west side of the south bound lanes.
The driver of the Honda Civic, Jacob A. Guest, age 32 of Indianapolis, was uninjured. Sergeant Emery and arriving officers rendered first aid until Anderson Fire- EMS arrived. Zimmerman was transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Anderson where he is being treated for his non-life threatening injury.
The handgun and money, believed to be from the armed robbery, were recovered at the scene. Sergeant Emery, who was uninjured in the incident, has been placed on administrative duty until the investigation is complete, as is the customary policy for employees involved in police action shootings. The investigation is ongoing, with charges against Zimmerman forthcoming.
MLK Blvd. at 53rd St. in Anderson has been reopened. The Indiana State Police were assisted at the scene by the Anderson Police Department, Anderson Fire Department, the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office and Madison County EMA.
