SCAM / Confidence Swindle Alert
A MIlan resident was contacted by a subject this afternoon that represented himself as a contractor for DTE.
The subject told him they would be working on the poles/lines running through is back yard and asked him if he would walk the property with him so the resident could point out the issues and what they were going to do. The resident advised the subject pointed out an older pole that was crooked, and a transformer that had “toxic oil” in it that would be replaced with a ground transformer.
The resident advised the subject seemed to know what he was talking about and at no time did it seem like the subject was stalling or attempting to fill time. The resident stated the subject took a call and advised he was done and would be heading to the next job site.
About two hours later the resident discovered a large amount of cash had been stolen from a drawer in his bedroom night stand.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male 35-40 years old with dark hair, average height and weight.
Milan PD contacted DTE. DTE checked and advised they have no DTE or contract crews working in the area today and no projects scheduled.
All DTE employees have identification cards. If you come in contact with this SCAM, or are simply not sure about any person wishing to enter your property or home, call 911. Milan PD officers will ensure the veracity of a genuine utility worker.
