PRESS RELEASE FOR THE WEEK OF August 8th – 14th, 2016
08/08
ETOH Pedestrian: Officers responded to a complaint of a man screaming in the street and sounding like he was being attacked. The man was located, found to be intoxicated and given a ride back to his boat for the evening.
Trespassing: An apartment manager reported that someone had been squatting in an empty apartment over the weekend and had left some personal items. Responding Officers found some damage to the premises, various scattered hygiene and personal items. If you have any information regarding this ongoing investigation, please contact the VPD.
Serve Time: Susan Patricia Rouse, DOB 05/03/1951, of Valdez, checked in to the Valdez Jail to serve 30 days with 27 days suspended.
Traffic Hazard: A caller reported a potential traffic hazard being created by an adult male waving a stick with a flag and disrupting the flow of traffic.
Welfare Check: Officers investigated a report of an emergency locator transmitter being activated in the Robe Lake area, but found no sign of a downed plane.
Traffic Compliant: A caller reported a motor home heading inbound on the Richardson Highway with all three of its slide outs extended and creating a traffic hazard. Officers located the vehicle; the driver explained the RV was having mechanical issues and they were on their way to get the issue fixed. Officers provided them an escort to their destination.
Animal at Large: The Animal Control Officer responded to the report of a dog at large. The ACO was able to determine who the dog belonged and returned him to their residence.
Family Issues: Officers assisted an individual who reported he was having domestic issues with his girlfriend.
Assault Simple: A physical altercation stemming from an argument over money was reported to have taken place at the dry dock area of the Valdez Harbor. Officers responded and made one arrest. Arrested: John Raymond Bryk, DOB 11/18/1985, of California, was arrested and charged with Assault 4th Degree.

Disturbance – Bar: Officers responded to a local bar following a report from an individual that he had been in an altercation with another man described as having short hair and wearing extra tuff boots. Both subjects were already gone from the area when Officers responded and the bartender reported everything was fine.
Traffic Compliant: A grey truck was reported as swerving erratically on North Harbor Drive. Responding Officers were unable to locate the vehicle.
Missing Person: Officers assisted in locating a missing 9 year old boy. The child was safely returned to his family.
Serve Time: Tamara Lynn Pennington, DOB 01/24/1979, of Valdez, checked in to the Valdez Jail to serve time for a total of 70 days with 63 suspended.
Unattended Death: Officers responded in conjunction with the Valdez Fire Department to the City Dock for a report of an unconscious adult male who was found to be deceased.
Animal at Large: The Animal Control Officer responded to a report of an animal at large and subsequently impounded one dog.
Possible Drunk Driver: A caller reported a possible drunk driver weaving back and forth in the roadway on Meals Avenue. Officers contacted the driver who was not impaired and who stated she was intentionally weaving because she was ‘bored.’
Disturbance – Other: Officers separated two individuals for the evening due to an ongoing domestic argument between the two parties.
Fireworks: Officers responded to the John Kelsey Dock in response to a report of possible gunshots or fireworks heard in that vicinity. Officers made contact with the occupants of the fishing vessel responsible for setting off the fireworks and warned them to desist from doing so.
Possible Drunk Driver: Dispatch received a report of a possible drunk driver swerving all over the Richardson Highway. Officers attempted to contact the driver who stopped the vehicle in the middle of the lane, then slowly moved forward, then crossed into the oncoming lane before pulling off the road. The driver was not intoxicated, but was a foreign tourist who was having some difficulties operating the vehicle.

Fireworks: Multiple complaints were received regarding fireworks being set off in the vicinity of South Harbor Drive. Officers contacted a group of cannery workers at a bonfire who agreed to stop shooting off the fireworks.
Criminal Mischief: Officers are investigating a report of vandalism that occurred at the Small Boat Harbor. If you have any information, please call the Valdez Police Department.
Arrested: Jaidyn Shakiah Tuttle, DOB 03/22/1996, of Valdez, was arrested on two outstanding Palmer bench warrants for Failure to Appear.

Animal Aggression: A caller reported that she and her dog had been attacked by another dog that was not on a leash. The caller reported that she wanted her complaint documented because the next time it happened; she would be taking more drastic measures.
UFO: A caller reported what she thought was a UFO when she saw orange lights flying around above her house. Responding Officers determined the lights were luminaries consisting of candles in brown paper bags.
Camping: The Community Service Officer contacted the occupants of a tent illegally camping near the kayak launch, told them to break camp and move on.
Traffic Complaint: Officers issued a citation to an individual who was reported as speeding past flaggers and disregarding their instructions.
Welfare Check: A welfare check was requested on an individual who hadn’t been heard from in 4 days. Officers contacted the individual who was fine; his phone and Ipad batteries were dead so he was unable to communicate. He said he would contact the concerned party.
Burglary – Non Residence: A local food vendor was reported as being burglarized. The complainant later called back to report an RV in the area had also been broken into. Anyone with any information regarding this ongoing investigation, please call the Valdez Police Department.
Camping: A Community Service Officer requested some out of town visitors refrain from camping in the Old Valdez town site. They agreed to pack up and move.

Animal at Large: A golden retriever dog was reported running around at large and being a nuisance. The Community Service Officer was able to capture the dog and the owner claimed the animal before it was taken to the shelter for impounding. The owner was also reminded of leash laws.
Harassment: Officers contacted an individual based on a complaint of harassment. The person contacted also made a compliant of harassment against the original complainant, but agreed to stay away.

Theft Bicycle: A bicycle was reported stolen after the owner realized his friends weren’t playing a prank on him by hiding the bike and it was actually missing. It is described as an orange Trek 12 speed. Please contact the VPD if you have any knowledge about this item.
Criminal Mischief: The Skate Park was reportedly vandalized with spray painted graffiti.
Arrested: Michael Clifton Hendrickson, DOB 05/25/1969, of Valdez, was arrested and charged with Driving under the Influence. His blood alcohol content was .198 at the time of his arrest.
Criminal Mischief: A boat owner reported unknown person or persons had vandalized his boat.
Arrested: Isaac Wayne Hamilton, DOB 11/20/1976, of Anchorage, was arrested on an outstanding Palmer bench warrant for Failure to Appear.
Animal at Large: A concerned caller reported finding a possibly injured 3-legged white and gold colored dog lying down in the road on Dylan Drive. The caller thought the animal might have been struck by a car. The Community Service Officer responded but the canine had already moved off into the bushes and the Officer was unable to locate it.

Disturbance Bar: The bouncer at a local bar requested VPD assistance with an unruly patron who refused to leave the premises. The threat of police involvement was enough to persuade the man to leave the area before the Officers arrived.
Traffic Hazard: A man wearing all dark clothing was reported walking down the center line of the highway in the dark and posing a traffic hazard. Responding Officer located the man who had moved onto the bike path.
Animal Impound: A caller requested an Officer come to their residence to pick up a black Labrador dog that they were currently holding after seeing it running at large for the past 3 days. The animal was subsequently impounded at the Animal Shelter.
Disturbance Other: An infamous local was once again disturbing drivers by practicing his batting swing in traffic. Officers contacted the man and gave him a verbal warning to cease and desist.
Theft Property: Jewelry was reported stolen from an employee of a local business. If you have any information about this incident, please call the Valdez Police Department.
Disturbance – Noise: Officers responded to the report of loud noise coming from an apartment building. The residents of an apartment were contacted regarding their video games being played at a loud volume; they agreed to keep it turned down.
Traffic Complaint: A traffic complaint was received regarding a blue truck speeding on Dylan Drive. Officer made contact with the driver who agreed to slow down.
Disturbance – Other: A fight was reported in progress near the Mountain Sky Hotel. Officers responded and made contact with one person who admitted to having a disagreement with two family members. All parties were separated.
Welfare Check: Officer responded to a local hotel to investigate a report of a juvenile child left unattended in a vehicle parked in the parking lot for approximately one hour. Officers were able to locate the child’s grandfather and issued him a citation for Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
Summonsed: Reina Denay Ewan, DOB 12/26/1995, of Copper Center, was summonsed to appear in court on the charge of Minor Consuming Alcohol – Habitual Offender.
