Man arrested in Sonoma with loaded shotgun
On August 17, 2016, at about 4:00 AM deputies from the Sonoma Police Department were dispatched to the Sonoma Safeway on a report of a suspicious vehicle. Store employees called to report that a black Dodge pickup had been parked in their parking lot for 2 ½ hours with the engine running. The store employees thought this was suspicious or feared the occupant may have a medical emergency.
When the deputies arrived, they noticed the Dodge pickup was still parked with its engine running and headlights on. They contacted the lone occupant, Salvador Calvillo-Perez, a 49-year-old El Verano man, who was sitting in the driver seat. As the deputies were talking with him they noticed a shotgun in the passenger area of the truck partially concealed beneath other items. The deputies ordered him out of the truck to separate Calvillo-Perez from the shotgun.
As he exited, Calvillo-Perez grabbed the barrel end of the shotgun in an apparent attempt to arm himself. The deputies were able to forcibly remove him from the truck, where he lost control of the shotgun. The deputies wrestled him to the ground, but Calvillo-Perez kept one hand under his body, near his waistband and refused to be handcuffed. Fearing Calvillo-Perez was trying to reach for another gun, a deputy struck him in the elbow with his flashlight. The strike had no effect, so the deputy deployed his Taser in the drive-stun mode, which freed up his hand and the deputies were able to get him handcuffed. Nobody was injured in the struggle.
Deputies examined the shotgun and found that it was loaded with seven rounds of 12 gauge shells, including one in the chamber. The shotgun had been reported stolen out of Sacramento County.
Calvillo-Perez was transported and booked into Sonoma County Jail on charges of possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm and resisting arrest. He is being held on $10,000 bail.
