**** Back to School Traffic Safety ****

It’s back to school time and the Livermore Police Department wants to remind our community members of the importance of driving safely around and through school areas.

On the morning of Monday, August 22, 2016, students in the Livermore Valley Unified School District will begin their 2016-2017 school year. While students and their parents/guardians focus will be split in many different directions for the start of school, we want to ensure that there is a major focus on safety as well. This year, we reached out to staff at a local school and asked for their help and input in regards to keeping students safe. With information gathered from our staff, The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), and from Principal Helen Gladden and Vice Principal Mistee Guzman, both from East Avenue Middle School, we have come up with a list of important tips for our community to review:

• Students should never jaywalk under any circumstances.

• Students should not cross against red lights, whether walking or on bikes/scooters/skateboards.

• Parents/Guardians must keep an eye out for children at all times.

• Parents/Guardians should not stop vehicles in the middle of crosswalks or allow students to exit their vehicles in the middle of the intersection.

• Obey all normal traffic signs and regulations, as well as any signs or directions that are established by the school on their grounds and in their lots.

• Avoid loading or unloading children at locations across the street from the school. This forces youngsters to unnecessarily cross busy streets—often mid-block rather than at a crosswalk.

• Students should not push one another into the street and parents/guardians should look out for this very dangerous activity.

• Prepare to stop for a school bus when overhead yellow lights are flashing. Drive with caution when you see yellow hazard warning lights are flashing on a moving or stopped bus.

• Stop for a school bus with its red overhead lights flashing, regardless of the direction from which the driver is approaching. Drivers must not proceed until the school bus resumes motion and the red lights stop flashing, or until signaled by the school bus driver to proceed.

The most important safety reminder is simple: There is no situation or circumstance where getting to or from school is so important that you cannot take the time to do it safely and within the law.

The Livermore Police Department takes the safety of all of our students very seriously and community members can expect a significant presence of both our Traffic Unit and Patrol officers on Monday in as many different areas as possible. By following just a few basic safety tips, we can ensure our students have a safe and happy start to the school year and avoid any injury or tragedy.
