*2nd Update*#LASD Homicide Investigate Deputy Involved Shooting, W Arbutus St/N Kemp Av, #Compton
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deputy involved shooting in the city of Compton on Thursday, August 25, 2016, is continuing. An extensive search was conducted by Sheriff’s Department personnel in the area of Wilmington Avenue, Arbutus Street, and Kemp Avenue in the city of Compton. The handgun reported to be in the suspect’s possession at the time of the shooting has not yet been located.
Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau are asking members of the community who saw the incident, or who may have information regarding the shooting, to come forward and assist with the investigative process. The Sheriff’s Department also wants to caution anyone who finds a firearm in the area to avoid retrieving it, and to leave the gun in place before immediately calling the Compton Sheriff’s Station or 9-1-1. Deputies will respond and safely recover the firearm.
The investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information available at this time.
Whenever a Deputy Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and it results in the fatality of a suspect, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner - Coroner, Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. The mission of the Office of Inspector General is to provide strong, independent and effective oversight of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and to ensure transparent, accountable and constitutional policing for the County of Los Angeles. The Critical Incident Review panel convenes to perform a preliminary risk management analysis of the shooting. This panel is comprised of the concerned chief and unit commander, risk management and training personnel, the chairperson of the Executive Force Review Committee, and a representative from the Office of the Los Angeles County Counsel. Every aspect of a Deputy-Involved shooting is ultimately evaluated by the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee, which determines whether there are any policy, tactical, supervisory, or training violations or concerns. The Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney also participates in the investigatory process and conducts a legal analysis of the shooting.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives are investigating a Deputy-Involved Shooting that occurred in the area of West Arbutus Street, east of North Kemp Avenue, in the City of Compton, on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at 8:28 p.m.
Investigators have learned that deputies were working a two person marked radio car and encountered a male Black adult standing on the west sidewalk in the 400 block of Wilmington Avenue.
When deputies attempted to speak with him, the man produced a handgun and ran northbound on Wilmington Avenue. The deputies immediately went in foot pursuit.
During the foot pursuit, the deputies eventually caught up to the male in the area of Arbutus Street and Kemp Avenue, near the wash. The man pointed The handgun at one of the deputies and a deputy- involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck by gunfire.
The male Black adult was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff’s Department canine is currently assisting in the search for the suspect’s handgun in the wash and surrounding area.
The deputies were not injured.
