One Vehicle Crash Sends Family to Hospitals

Tippecanoe County-Today at approximately 5:40 p.m. on I-65 southbound just south of the 172 exit (that is SR 26 exit), a black SUV rolls into the median ejecting two of the five occupants.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Tyler Bentlage has revealed that the 2003 Toyota Sequoia driven by Brian K. Malay, 41 of Covington, KY was SB in the left lane when he attempted to change lanes. Realizing there was no room, Maley attempted to return to the left lane, over corrected and the vehicle started to roll several times ejecting two of the passengers. The SUV came to rest in the median on its top.

The two juvenile occupants ejected were transported to the two local hospitals in Lafayette with one being sent on to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis with life threatening in juries. A third juvenile was transported to Franciscan St. Elizabeth Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The wife, Mary E. Maley, 40 was transported to IU Arnett Hospital with a complaint of pain. Brian was transported to Franciscan St. Elizabeth Hospital with what appear to be no-life threatening injuries.

It was raining at the time of the crash with wet pavement which could have contributed to the loss of control. Speed was also a contributing factor due to the conditions of the roadway. Traffic was slowed for about two hours for cleanup of the crash, treating the injured and the investigation. Assisting at the scene was Senior Trooper Ryan Winters, Tippecanoe County EMS, Lafayette Fire and Jim’s Wrecker Service. I have no pictures.

Suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
