Update on Little Cranberry Fire
3:15 PM Monday August 29, 2016
Update on the Anacortes Forestlands fire at Little Cranberry Lake.
The fire at Little Cranberry Lake is 95% contained, the remaining 5% is on cliff areas that are tough terrain to access. The fire is controlled. DNR staff including 44 hand crew, 3 engine staff members, and 2 incident command staff are still working the fire. GIS mapping of the fire area has determined that approximately 18 acres have burned through the Little Cranberry Lake forestland area.
The fire is still under investigation and there are no leads at this time. Any leads should be shared with the DNR NW Region office at 360.856.3500. The City of Anacortes pays a fire patrol tax to DNR which allows DNR to assist with fire patrol in our forestland areas.
DNR crew is mopping up the fire and seeking out deep seated heat that is burning below ground. This will result in large holes 6-8 feet deep and several feet wide. Residents may seek some residual smoke coming from these holes. The surface fires have been suppressed.
DNR staff will remain on site until the entire area can be checked by hand for hot spots and underground heat through a grid style review of the area. Afterwards DNR will continue to have a presence at the site and will routinely patrol the area. DNR will also be working to ensure that the control lines that they built do not create erosion.
