Update on the Anacortes Forestlands Fire at Little Cranberry Lake
DNR staff including 22-hand crew, 1-engine staff member, and 1 incident command staff remain on site. Approximately 18 acres have burned through the Little Cranberry Lake forestland area. Remaining crews are focusing on underground heat pockets that are still being found.
The fire is still under investigation and there are no leads at this time. Any leads should be shared with the Anacortes Fire Department at 360.293.1925. The AFD will coordinate with DNR NW Region office at 360.856.3500. The City of Anacortes pays a fire patrol tax to DNR, which allows DNR to assist with fire patrol in our forestland areas.
DNR is demobilizing their hand crews and is transitioning the fire response to patrol status. One engine will be making regular visits to the area to check for remaining hotspots. Residents may see some residual smoke. DNR requests that if the public sees smoke in the area impacted by the fire that they call 911.
The trails on the west side of Cranberry Lake are anticipated to reopen on Thursday, September 1st. All trails leading into the fire zone will remain closed indefinitely. Trail users are asked to abide by the signage and stay out of the areas impacted by the fire. These areas of the park may be hazardous due to the tree’s weakened root systems. After a fire, heavy rains or strong winds create additional risks.
