Patrol Emphasis on Pedestrian Safety in September & October
On Tuesday, August 29th, a woman sustained injury to her back, elbow, and finger when she was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street at the intersection of 7th Street and Commercial Avenue in Anacortes. Per witness statements, the woman was walking in the crosswalk when she was struck. Thankfully, her injuries were non-life-threatening.
A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) analyzing 2012 data reported that 4,743 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 76,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the US that year. Pedestrian deaths accounted for 14 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2012 and 3 percent of all injuries in traffic crashes.
In an effort to educate the public and prevent avoidable accidents and injuries, the APD Patrol Unit is focusing on pedestrian safety in September and October. Take your time. Slow down. Arrive safely.
