Single Vehicle Crash Ejects Passenger and Sends Four to Hospital UPDATE

<p><strong>&nbsp;Alfonzo Balboa II, age 21 of Kalamazoo, Michigan succumbed to his injuries yesterday afternoon, Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Loyola medical Center in Maywood, Illinois.&nbsp; </strong>Balboa was a back seat passenger in a vehicle that lost control on I-80/94 west bound just east of the Toll Road/north Ripley exit ramp on Friday evening.&nbsp; Balboa was ejected as the vehicle rolled.&nbsp; See below for the original release.</p>

<p><strong>Lake Station, Lake County-</strong>At 6:57 P.M. this Friday, September 09, 2016 evening, a single vehicle crash on I-80/94 west bound just east of the Toll Road/north Ripley exit ramp sent four people to the hospital with one of the passengers being ejected.</p>

<p>Preliminary investigation by Trooper Justin Hansen revealed a 2009 Toyota pickup driven by Luis Diaz, age 21 of Kalamazoo, Michigan was in the middle lane when he lost control during the heavy rain downpour at that time.&nbsp; The pickup went off the road to the north/right and struck a guard rail, causing the pickup to roll unknown number of times.</p>

<p>Alfonzo Balboa II, age 21 of Kalamazoo, a passenger in the back seat behind the front seat passenger, was asleep not wearing a seat belt and was ejected out of the pickup.&nbsp; The pickup rolled on top of Balboa.&nbsp; Balboa was taken to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary with life threatening injuries.&nbsp; Family has been notified.</p>

<p>Pedro Diaz, age 20 of Kalamazoo, a front seat passenger, was wearing a seat belt and was taken to North Lake Methodist Hospital with non-life threatening injuries</p>

<p>Augstin Leal-Diaz, age 21 of Kalamazoo, back seat passenger behind the driver, was also wearing a seat belt and was taken to North lake Methodist with non-life threatening injuries.</p>

<p>Luis Diaz was not wearing a seat belt and was taken to North Lake Methodist with non-life threatening injuries.</p>

<p>The right and middle lanes were closed during the investigation, removal of the injured and pickup with traffic getting by in the left lane</p>

<p>Assisting: Troopers Anthony Potesta, Nathan Wolfe, Khari Walton, and Brandon Alberts, Hoosier Helpers, Lake Station Fire Department, Prompt Ambulance, and Midnight Blue Towing</p>

<p><em>All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law</em></p>
