Lake County-Hammond-The Indiana State Police Lowell District is currently investigating a police action shooting that occurred yesterday evening, in Hammond, involving an officer with the Hammond Police Department.
Preliminary investigation revealed, yesterday, Sunday, September 25th, 2016, at approximately 7:19 p.m., Hammond Police went to a residence at 1583 177th Place to check on the resident, Bryan Jones, age 33.
An acquaintance on the phone with Jones earlier Sunday had called Hammond Police to have them do a welfare check on him due to suicidal comments he had been making.
Officers arrived and began talking to Jones. Eventually talks broke down and Jones returned back inside his residence. While inside his residence officers noticed that Jones had picked up firearm/s and the officers returned toward their vehicles.
Jones, at one point, shot one of the firearms inside his home. Attempts to negotiate with Jones were unsuccessful when he came out of his residence with a shotgun and an automatic handgun.
Jones lowered the shotgun toward officers. This action resulted in a Hammond Police officer to shoot at Jones one time striking him.
Jones was taken to Munster Community Hospital where he is in stable condition. No police officers or other citizens were injured.
This investigation is ongoing, and is expected to take some time to complete, this is all the information that will be released at this time. After the investigation is completed it will be turned over to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for their review.
