After Officers Contact Media Regarding Corruption, LAX Police Union Renews Call to Bring in Inspector General
After One Dozen Police Officers Contact News Media Regarding Corruption and Retaliation, LAX Police Union Renews Call to Bring in Inspector General
LOS ANGELES – After one dozen police officers in the Los Angeles Airport Police Department contacted news media regarding corruption within the highest ranks, the Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers Association (LAAPOA) renews its call for the Inspector General to be brought in investigate.
“It’s obvious that something is wrong at the airport,” said Marshall McClain, President of the Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers Association. “The procedure is clear. The Los Angeles Police Commission’s inspector general is supposed to be brought in to investigate allegations of misconduct and corruption. It’s what the union, police department, Airport Police Commission, Los Angeles Police Commission and the mayor all agreed to. It is the law under AB 128. Now we have several scathing media reports of unchecked misconduct ranging from cronyism, retaliation and rule-bending that has resulted in the resignation of an assistant chief and internal affairs lieutenant. The latest report of retaliation is so egregious that once again we find ourselves asking the Los Angeles Airport Police Commission to do its job and call in the Inspector General Alex Bustamante immediately. The traveling public expects us to keep them safe and out of harm’s way and we need the mayor, police chief and airport commission to do the same for us.”
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti supported AB 128, the bill that allows the inspector general to be brought in to investigate and audit the Airport Police. However, the authority to call in the Inspector General rests with the Airport Commission, which despite all that comes to light, has not asked so far.
Under California Penal Code section 830.1, the Inspector General of the Los Angeles Police Commission has the authority to conduct audits and investigations of the Los Angeles Airport Police.
