Homecoming Week message from the Seymour Police Department

Monday kicks off Homecoming 2016 for Seymour High School. Our department works very closely with the Seymour Area Public School District, which is a relationship that we are very proud of. While this is an exciting time of year that many young people and alumni look foreword to, there are special considerations that we would like parents and students to keep in mind this week.

Juvenile curfew begins at 10:00 PM throughout homecoming week. First time offenders may be sent home with a warning depending on the situation. However, repeat offenders or juveniles involved in vandalism may face a fine of up to $130. While the official curfew time is 10:00 PM, we encourage parents to set an earlier curfew for their student that is appropriate to their age. It is getting dark out early in the evening, and students running about after hours in dark clothing could pose a safety risk.

Fines for vandalism (Criminal Damage to Property) start at $200 and go up to $565. We have already taken reports of vehicles/property being egged, and we will have zero tolerance for acts of vandalism. Our department has already taken reports of vehicles and property being damaged. Students should also know that while it may be "all in good fun" to toilet paper a fellow student's house, in the past there have been incidents where elderly residents who are unable to clean up the mess were randomly targeted. This is something that is in everyone's interest to avoid.

Additionally extra attention will be paid to driving behaviors of young people this week. Reckless or disorderly driving can result in a fines ranging from $114-$313.

Finally, as always, our department as well as the school district has zero tolerance for underage drinking.

This week presents a great opportunity for students, parents and citizens to show school spirit and community pride. We aren't trying to be the "fun police", but we are trying to make this a safe week for all students and to keep this great tradition alive for many students to come.
