Illinois Woman Killed When She Steps Outside Her Vehicle

Jasper County-An Illinois woman was killed when she stepped outside her vehicle today on I-65 south bound near the Fair Oaks exit.

Preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Dwayne Halliburton revealed at approximately 10:45 a.m., this Monday, October 10th, 2016, morning a black 2014 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by Nika L. Trippi, 30 of Lombard, Illinois, pulled her car over on the outer shoulder on I-65 south bound at the 219.7 mile marker (this is less than a ½ mile from the Fair Oaks exit) to check on noise coming from her vehicle. After Trippi closed her driver’s door she was hit by a passing semi.

The semi was described, by a witness, as an older model Freightliner gray in color pulling a enclosed box trailer also gray in color.  The semi never stopped and continued south on I-65.

Trippi’s Chevrolet Suburban was pulled well off the roadway and there was no damage to it.  Trippi after being struck was thrown partially under her vehicle.  She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jasper County Coroner of massive blunt force trauma.

Trippi’s mother and her two minor children were inside the Chevrolet when this occurred; they were not injured.

Family has been notified.

Traffic south bound was diverted off at the 220 mile marker (Fair Oaks exit) until approximately 2:20 p.m. for reconstruction of the crash.

Assisting: Master Trooper Lawrence McFarrin, Jasper County Coroner, Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, Keener Township Ambulance, Marion Township Fire Department, and Cheever’s Towing
