Modesto, CA – Detectives continue their investigation into the events that led to an officer-involved shooting.

Early Saturday morning, officers were called to investigate a family disturbance in the 1500 block of Queens Avenue. The caller reported his 53-year-old daughter, Kim Jackson, was intoxicated and vandalizing the inside of his residence.

Officers responded but Jackson had left the home. Approximately one hour later Jackson returned to the residence and the caller reported she was now armed with a knife.

Officers arrived and were walking up to the home when Jackson confronted them in the street, armed with multiple knives. As officers were giving verbal commands for her to drop the knives, she advanced rapidly at them with the knives raised above her head. Officers utilized a taser, bean bags and one officer used his duty weapon. She was rushed to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.

The three officers involved in this incident were 19 year veteran Alex Bettis, 18 year veteran Michael Callahan and 8 year veteran Joseph Lamantia. The officers were uninjured and placed on paid administrative leave, which is a standard procedure with all officer-involved shootings.

Details leading up to the incident are still under investigation.

Three separate and independent investigations have been launched into this incident. The Modesto Police Department is conducting both a criminal and administrative investigation and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent review of the incident.
