Undecided on Candidates or Issues? Use LAAPOA’s Voter Guide
With November 8 just around the corner, LAAPOA reminds all members and supporters that it’s time to make sure that you are registered to vote, as well as informed on the issues and candidates. If you are not registered to vote (or are not sure whether you are), visit registertovote.ca.gov to check your status, register or re-register online. The registration deadline to vote in the 2016 general election is Saturday, October 15.
While selecting our nation’s next president is obviously at the top of the list of priorities for most voters, there are numerous state office candidates and public-safety-related ballot measures that will be decided in this election. These political leaders and new laws will greatly affect not only the future of our state but also, because of California’s significant economic and cultural influence, the entire country. As the frequently used phrase says, “As California goes, so goes the nation.” (Considering our state is the sixth-largest economy in the world, it’s even safe to say that the decisions we make at the ballot box have global consequences.)
LAAPOA has taken a stand on the following initiatives related to public safety, consistent with the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) and other law enforcement organizations in California.
Prop 51: YES
Authorizes new school bonds
Prop 53: NO
Requires voter approval for revenue bonds over $2 billion
Prop 56: YES
Increases cigarette tax
Prop 57: NO
Increases parole chances for felons convicted of nonviolent crimes and gives them more opportunities to earn credits for good behavior
Prop 59: YES
Asks whether California’s elected officials should propose and ratify a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United
Prop 61: NO
Caps amount state agencies are allowed to pay for prescription drugs
Prop 62: NO
Repeals death penalty
Prop 63: NO
Prohibits possession of large-capacity magazines; requires background checks for ammunition purchases
Prop 64: NO
Legalizes marijuana and hemp
Prop 66: YES
Reforms death penalty procedures
LAAPOA also endorses the following candidates, who have been vetted for their backgrounds and voting records on issues important to law enforcement.
