Parvovirus Warning for Dog Owners
Santa Barbara Police Department Animal Control is warning dog owners of the possibility of exposure to canine parvovirus (parvo) in the vicinity of Mesa Lane Beach, also known as Mesa Lane Steps Beach. This beach is accessed by a lengthy staircase located near the intersection of Mesa Lane and Edgewater Way.
On October 12, 2016 SBPD Animal Control was notified by Santa Barbara County Animal Services that a canine parvovirus (parvo) positive 10-month old Shiba Inu breed dog was taken by its owner to Mesa Lane Beach on Sunday, October 9, 2016. SBPD Animal Control is warning the public of the possibility that pet dogs may be exposed to this highly contagious virus. Canine parvovirus is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their feces; it will not infect humans. The virus can remain in the environment for up to 7 months. Symptoms of canine parvovirus include vomiting, diarrhea, gastro-intestinal upset, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, and dehydration. The disease may lead to death, particularly among young puppies. SBPD Animal Control is advising pet owners to make sure their dog vaccinations are current prior to allowing their pets in the area of Mesa Lane Beach. Warning signs have been posted in the area cautioning dog owners of the possible exposure hazard.
