ROSELAND INSIDER

With Hurricane Season active through November the Mayor and Council offer the following basic preparedness tips from FEMA:

Know how to stay informed-receiving timely information about weather conditions or other emergency events can make all of the difference in knowing when to take action to stay safe. Every individual family member is advised to sign up for our emergency notification system Swift 911. Please visit our website at www.roselandnj.org or contact the Borough at 973-226-8080 to register.

Know your evacuation routes, plan your transportation and identify a place to stay-if you plan to evacuate by car, keep your car fueled and in good condition. Keep emergency supplies and a change of clothes in your car. Have a plan for where you can stay. Check on you neighbors.

Practice taking shelter-Identify where you will take shelter and practice getting all household members to that location quickly. Select a small, interior, windowless room, such as a bathroom or a closet, on the lowest level not likely to flood.

Practice how you will communicate with family members-in case you are not together when the emergency alert is issued; practice how you will communicate with your family members. Make sure cell phones are fully charged. Sending texts is faster than making a phone call. Keep important number written down not just stored in your phone. Decide where to meet after the emergency is over.

Emergency Power Planning for Medical Devices –Have a plan for alternative sources of power and regularly check your alternative power equipment.

Store supplies so you can grab them quickly if you need to evacuate-take time know to make a list of the things you would need or want to take with you if you had to leave home quickly. Store the basic emergency supplies in a “Go Bag". Be ready to grab other essentials items quickly before leaving. .

Store supplies you will need to live at home with no power-

Flashlight, radio and extra batteries

At least 1 gallon of water per person per day for at least 3 days

At least a 3 day supply of non-perishable food

First Aid Kit, medications and medical supplies
