Homicide Investigation Underway in Clay County
Clay County—Indiana State Police Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators are assisting the Brazil Police Department in an investigation located at 922 Noble Street in Brazil. The victim was discovered at the residence just after midnight this morning.
At approximately 12:04 AM this morning the Brazil Police Department responded to a 911 call from a male stating he had been shot. Officers arrived at the scene and confirmed the information. The victim was unresponsive. An ambulance was called and the victim was transported to St. Vincent/Clay Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Brazil Police Department then requested assistance from Indiana State Police. Interviews were conducted and a person of interest was determined. At approximately 1:15 PM this afternoon the person of interest was located by police at 601 West Central Avenue, apt F11 in Brazil. Officers secured the area and tried to get the individual to come out. The individual appeared in the window for a brief time showing both hands. He then closed the curtains, and short time later officers heard a single gunshot. At no time did officers discharge their firearms. Upon entering the apartment they found one male on the floor of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The person of interest was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital with life threatening injuries. This is an ongoing investigation and further information will be released when it is obtained.
Deceased: Eric Hutton, age 27, Brazil, Indiana
Family of deceased has been notified.
No other information will be released at this time.
Investigation at the scene was conducted by the Indiana State Police, Clay County Sheriff’s department, Brazil Police Department, DNR, and Coroner’s office.
