Criminal Homicide/Murder Investigation
The Southern Pines Police Department announces a Criminal Homicide/Murder investigation. On Friday, October 28, 2016, at approximately 3:49 pm, the Southern Pines Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the 700 block of West Michigan Avenue. Upon arrival of the first responding patrol officers, a small crowd was observed near the front porch of 714 W. Michigan Ave. where two juvenile gunshot victims where located.
The two juvenile victims, both residents of 714 W. Michigan Avenue where identified as twelve year old Jalinda Campbell and three year old Kyleigh Graham. Jalinda Campbell and Kyleigh Graham were both taken to area hospitals where Jalinda Campbell later died as a result of her gunshot injuries. Kyleigh Graham is still being treated at an undisclosed medical facility and is listed in stable condition.
This incident was not a random act of violence, the investigation has revealed that this drive by shooting had an intended target and both victims were innocent bystanders.
Chief Robert Temme offered the following comments following this tragic incident:
“Today, the families of Jalinda Campbell and Kyleigh Graham are suffering an overwhelming grief and heartache. The Southern Pines Police Department shares the pain and sorrow felt by these families, as does our entire community. A beautiful bright light has been extinguished, and another is struggling to shine on. Please draw comfort in knowing that the entire Southern Pines Police Department has pledged an unwavering commitment to the relentless pursuit of justice for all concerned. May the hand of God touch us all.”
