Chula Vista Library and AARP Seek Volunteer Tax Preparers

The calendar year will soon come to a close, and tax season will loom ahead. To relieve the stress of tax preparation, AARP and the Chula Vista Public Library have again joined forces to recruit volunteers to serve as tax preparers and counselors. With 956 free tax returns prepared by AARP in the library last year for seniors and residents with low-to-moderate incomes, there is a critical need for trained volunteers, including bilingual English-Spanish speakers. Volunteers don’t have to be tax professionals, according to Donley Cates, AARP’s district coordinator. AARP is seeking those with moderate computer skills and some knowledge of tax law and tax preparation. Mandatory specialized training will be held for two weeks, Monday through Friday, January 9 through January 20, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lesson material will be provided, written by the IRS and the California Franchise Tax Board especially for the AARP program. Prospective volunteers are asked to contact Cates at [email protected] for details.

Positions are available in the Chula Vista Library’s Civic Center and South Chula Vista Branches. Volunteers who complete the training will become certified AARP Tax-Aides. Mileage will be reimbursed for eligible Tax-Aides who volunteer at least one day per week, six to eight daytime hours, during the months of February through April 15.

Visit our libraries in the next week and attend our upcoming programs and events. Check out your holiday reading, music and films, too!
