GARY MAN DIES IN SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH

Crown Point, Lake County-A Gary man died, late yesterday evening, when he failed to negotiate the curve on the exit ramp from I-65 to US 231 (Crown Point).

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Brant Goubeaux revealed at approximately 10:05 p.m., yesterday evening, November 4th, 2016, a 2008 Toyota Camry was south bound on I-65 and attempted to exit at US 231 (247 mile marker-Crown Point). The Toyota continued straight instead of going around the curve to exit.

The Camry went off the roadway, into the grassy gore area, and struck a large light pole.  The driver, John J. Gondell, 48 of Gary, had to be extricated from the car.

Gondell was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy from the Lake County Coroner’s Office.  Family has been notified.

It is not know why Gondell failed to take the curve on the ramp.

Assisting: Troopers Khari Walton, Paul Arnold, and Kurt Jones, Crown Point Police Department, Crown Point Fire Department, Lake County Coroner’s Office and Sampson’s Towing

All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
