K-9 Aero Apprehends Fleeing Felon After Pursuit
On Friday, November 4, 2016, at about 10:16 P.M. an Anderson Police Officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 1998 Ford Ranger for a vehicle code violation in the area of Ox Yoke Rd. and Stainless Wy. The driver of the vehicle, Harold BROWN, age 56, of Cottonwood, failed to yield to the officer’s emergency lights and a pursuit ensued.
BROWN led officers down I-5 at speeds of about 90 MPH into the town of Cottonwood. Once in Cottonwood BROWN continued to attempt to evade officers by speeding, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, and failing to stop at posted stop signs. At one point in the pursuit BROWN drove in a circle about five times in a north Cottonwood neighborhood.
BROWN finally stopped his vehicle at the dead end of Savage Dr. and Long Branch Dr. BROWN fled from the vehicle running northbound into a field area.
Anderson Police Canine Aero and his handler were on scene and BROWN was ordered to stop or Aero would be deployed to apprehend him. BROWN failed to follow the officer’s commands and Aero was deployed.
Aero located BROWN fleeing in a field of thick blackberry bushes and quickly apprehended him.
BROWN was provided first aid treatment at the scene for the dog bite, and later transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
BROWN advised officers he ran because he did not have a valid driver’s license. A search of BROWN’s vehicle revealed marijuana packaged for sales, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia.
BROWN was found to be on felony probation out of Alameda County and his driver’s license was suspended for a prior DUI.
The case will be submitted to the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office for review, with requested charges of recklessly evading a peace officer, evading a peace officer on the wrong side of the roadway, possession and transporting of marijuana for sales, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a suspended driver’s license, and a felony violation of his probation.
