Phone Scam ALERT: Pacific Gas and Electric Company claiming your account is overdue and to send them money.
The Tehachapi Police Department has been advised that citizens are receiving phone calls from individuals who are representing themselves as personnel from Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The caller usually tells the citizen that their account is past due and their electricity will be turned off followed by a case number. The caller will instruct you to obtain a money order and pay the balance due.
No legitimate company would request you to go to a retail store or pharmacy (CVS, RiteAid, Walmart, etc) to purchase a pre-paid credit card or obtain a money order for payment of any kind.
Be aware, never give your personal information to anyone over the phone. Do not give callers information about your bank account, pin numbers, Social Security number or any type of identifying information. Phone Scam thieves will try and trick you into giving them money and information.
If you receive a call, protect yourself and your information and do not send money! If you receive a phone call, always verify who the caller truly is; do not use a phone number they provide you as verification. Usually numbers provided by the thief will go to a voice recording/message. If you have sent money or believe that you are a victim of a crime, please call the Tehachapi Police Department or your local agency and report the incident.
