Modesto, CA – Just before 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night, officers responded to a 9-1-1 call of a man down in the roadway on Tully Road near Snyder Avenue. Once officers arrived, they learned that the man, identified as 69-year-old Richard Jenkins, had been hit by a car. Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures; however Jenkins succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The early investigation indicates that Jenkins was walking northbound in the roadway when he was struck by a 2002 Honda Accord that was also traveling northbound. The driver of the Honda remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
As standard practice in a fatal vehicle collision, the Modesto Police Department Traffic Unit has initiated a comprehensive collision investigation. At this point, drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor. Witness statements as well as physical evidence are being thoroughly evaluated before any collision factor or cause will be determined.
