Man Arrested During Light Parade Festivities
Shipshewana - On the evening of November 12th, 2016 at approximately 6:15 PM while conducting traffic control detail for the Shipshewana Light Parade event, officer from the Shipshewana Police Department were involved with an armed subject call. Shipshewana Sergeant J. Carlos Jasso and Deputy Levi Bouwkamp were involved in traffic control at the intersection of State Road 5 and Middlebury Street in Shipshewana, when Sergeant Jasso witnessed a female falling into the street just prior to the actual parade arriving at that location. Sergeant Jasso proceeded to that location to assist the female but his attention was quickly directed to a male subject in the crowd restraining another male from behind. Sergeant Jasso ordered the male to immediately release him. According to Sergeant Jasso the male turned around after being released holding a small caliber handgun in his hands. At that time Sergeant Jasso grabbed the handgun and ordered the male to drop it. A struggle for control over the handgun ensued between the male and both police officers. The male was disarmed and placed into custody. “It was a miracle that no one in the crowd was hurt”, said Jasso. The argument allegedly began over people blocking the view of the parade route.
Joshua A. Colter, 24, of Kendallville, was arrested on charges of Disorderly Conduct a Class B Misdemeanor and Resisting Law Enforcement a class A Misdemeanor. An additional charge for Pointing a Firearm, a Level 6 Felony, has also been filed with the LaGrange County Prosecutor’s Office. The Shipshewana Police Department was assisted by officers from the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police Troopers from District 21. Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
