Deputy Talks Violent Male into Surrendering in Rancho Palos Verdes

Deputies from Lomita Station responded to the 28600 block of Mount Whitey Way in Rancho Palos Verdes this morning, regarding a call of a male who was suffering from mental health issues, who had assaulted a family member. The 31 year old male who resides at the location with his family, has a history of violent confrontations with deputies.
Upon the arrival of first responders, they encountered the extremely uncooperative male suspect, perched upon a rock waterfall above a pool in the corner of the yard.  He was very agitated and refused orders to come down and speak with deputies.  Knowing his history, deputies requested a crisis negotiation team.  While awaiting their arrival, Deputy Michael Sampson assigned to Lomita Station, and recently trained by the Department in dealing with individuals in mental distress, calmly engaged the male in conversation.  In a matter of minutes, he was able to convince the male to surrender peacefully to the deputies.
The suspect was transported to LA County USC Medical Center jail ward for booking on charges of elder abuse.  This was a perfect example of putting our mental health training to use to end a potentially violent situation peacefully, and without injury to the suspect or deputies.
