Shumont Fire Update
The command post at Broad River Fire Department on Shumont Rd. demobilized this morning. As of today we had no active fire around structures within our area. Broad River FD was supported by Buncombe County Emergency Management, every department within Buncombe as well as surrounding counties and other states. Firefighters were supported by BRFD Auxiliary, Hearts With Hands, local residents, and many many more. Firefighters directly on the front line were fed hot meals the majority of time and given other comforts such as warm thick socks, toboggans, personal items, etc. that were received by a huge amount of caring and grateful people. There were no structures reported damaged and no injuries. Firefighters from other areas said they were treated as though they were family from complete strangers.
Please keep in mind that we are still under serious fire conditions and still under a burning ban. Use extreme caution with open flames, heat generating equipment, and especially fireplace ash disposal. There will be fuels such as timber that will smolder inside the black areas for quite a while. If it's something well inside a contained area please use good judgement when deciding to call. If it concerns you, you see actual flames near unburned areas, or close to structures do not hesitate. Unfortunately there are individuals who will intentionally set fires. If you see someone doing this or displaying suspicious behavior please report. The forest service will likely remain in the area for some time so please show patience and keep speeds down helping to keep these folks safe.
Unless there are changes with this fire involving Broad River area this will be our last update. The forest service is updating a community board at our Community Center. Stay Safe, continue practicing fire safety, thank you to all, and know that our firefighters are proud to serve this community!
