Indiana State Police Arrest Hammond Police Officer for Operating While Intoxicated.

Lowell, Lake County--  On 11/26/2016 at approximately 2:00 a.m., an Indiana State Trooper was conducting a traffic stop on I-65 at the 240.5 mile marker in Lake County. This is just north of the Lowell/Hebron exit of I-65.  While conducting a traffic stop, the Trooper observed a vehicle that had just passed in the left lane veer abruptly over to the exit ramp to S.R. 2 while nearly run off the roadway, traveling completely onto the right shoulder. It was so abrupt the female driver of the traffic stop also observed the vehicle and stated, “Oh my God!”  The Trooper immediately ended that traffic stop to investigate the erratic driving behavior of the passing vehicle.  The Trooper then followed the suspect vehicle and observed it travelling west on S.R. 2, cross the right fog line and continued to weave while driving on the right shoulder,

A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle, a black 2007 Honda Civic, on State Road 2 just west of the Indiana State Police Post.  During the traffic stop, the Trooper detected the strong odor of an alocholic beverage on the driver's breath and an Operating While Intoxicated investigation was then conducted.  The driver was identified as  MATHEW L. ANDERSON, 30 years old from Hammond, IN.  Anderson stated that he had weapons in the vehicle and that he was a Hammond Police Officer.  Anderson was offered the opportunity to perform standardized field sobriety tests; however, he refused all tests including refusing the certified breath test at the Lake County Jail.  Anderson was then processed at the Lake County Jail where he has a bond of $1000.  Anderson is charged with Operating While Intoxicated (Refusal), Operating While Intoxicated (Endangering) and Unsafe Lane Movement.

All questions regarding Anderson's employment status should be directed to the Hammond Police Department.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
