Suspect in Wheelchair Arrested for Robbery
On 11/29/16 at approximately 3:00 pm Chula Vista Police Officers responded to several 911 calls regarding a suspect in a wheelchair trying to rob businesses in the area of 3rd and Naples. The 911 calls stated that the suspect claimed to have a gun and was threatening to kill others if he wasn’t given money. Responding officers were notified that the suspect had successfully robbed Paty’s Barber Shop at 1099 Third Avenue, Chula Vista and was still in the area. The suspect, later identified as Daniel Meza, 49 years old, was located by responding officers in front of Walgreens at 3rd and Naples. He had one hand concealed in his jacket pocket and refused to remove it at officer’s request. He was very uncooperative, told officers that he had a gun, and told them he wanted to die. The officers took Meza into custody after a brief struggle resulting in no major injuries to the suspect or officers. No weapon was found on Meza.
During the investigation officers learned that Meza attempted to rob more than one open business in the area and did in fact obtain money during the robbery of Paty’s Barber Shop. Witnesses there told police that Meza entered the business and yelled that he had a gun and would kill them if they didn't give him the money in the cash register. One employee gave Meza some cash from the register and Meza left the business.
Meza was arrested and transported to Scripps Hospital in Chula Vista where he was treated and released. Meza was then booked into County Jail for robbery and two counts of attempted robbery.
