Two Sent to Hospital After Trooper Car Collides with Passenger Car
New Castle – A trooper and the driver of a second vehicle were transported to the hospital this morning after their cars collided on SR3 at Trojan Lane here in New Castle. The crash occurred just before 9:30 a.m., after a Ford Fusion, driven by Harold Devine Jr., age 82 of New Castle, was south bound on SR3 and attempted to turn east onto Trojan Lane.
Trooper Jarrin Franklin, age 32 and a four year member of the Indiana State Police, was driving his fully marked police car north on SR3 when the Fusion turned into his path. Franklin was unable to stop before hitting the Fusion in the passenger door. Franklin was treated and released at Henry County Hospital for knee pain, and Harold Devine was transported to IU Health’s Ball Memorial Hospital for a possible broken shoulder.
Mr. Devine told investigators that he had a flashing yellow arrow at the time of the crash, and wasn't aware he had to yield to oncoming traffic before turning. Trooper Eric Downey investigated the crash and was assisted by Indiana State Police Lieutenant Tom Dujmovich, Sergeants Todd Wallace and Dave Whitinger, as well as Troopers Jeff Culley, Brian Thomas and Greg Magee; the New Castle Police Department, New Castle Fire Department and local EMS.
