In early October, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office began receiving complaints of mail being stolen out of mailboxes in the Mill Spring and Saluda communities. After a thorough investigation, Detectives recovered most of the stolen mail and obtained warrants on Denikka Michelle Simpson of Forest City, NC and Jennifer Elizabeth Anderson of Ellenboro, NC in relation to the thefts. Ms. Anderson is currently in the custody of the Rutherford County Jail, but Ms. Simpson is still wanted on multiple outstanding warrants related to the investigation. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Ms. Denikkia Michelle Simpson should contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at (828)-894-3001.
With the holiday season quickly approaching the Polk County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to be on the lookout for mail frauds and thefts. Investigators would like to encourage everyone to follow these tips to avoid becoming a victim of mail fraud or theft:
• Be wary of offers that are “too good to be true”
• Do not respond to mail offers for prizes or products that you did not request or enter
• Check your mail daily, and if you will be out of town or unavailable contact your local Post Office to have them keep your mail there until you return
• Donate to reputable charities only, and verify with local charities before responding to charitable solicitations in the mail
• Document suspicious activity in your neighborhoods, and relay that information to your local Sheriff’s office.
• If you are not going to be home to receive packages, have them delivered to a safe location.
• Keep a running list of serial numbers for the items you own or purchase. Photograph jewelry and other items without serial numbers.
