DUI Driving Results in Fatality

On 12/04/16, at approximately 6:46 PM, the Chula Vista Police Department received numerous 911 calls reporting a serious traffic accident near at the intersection of Orange Ave and Third Ave.

The preliminary investigation at the scene which included several witnesses, indicate the suspect was involved in two minor property damage only collisions in a parking after leaving a bar. He fled the scene only to return a short time later. When he was confronted about the minor Hit and Run collisions he fled at a high rate of speed.

While fleeing he lost control of his car, drove over the curb onto the sidewalk and into a bus stop bench. A pedestrian seated on the bench was hit and suffered an amputated leg. He was transported to a trauma center where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver, a 28-year-old Imperial Beach Resident was arrested at the scene for DUI. The driver has 4 known previous DUI arrests.

The driver was booked into San Diego County Jail and charged with Murder, Manslaughter and DUI.

The Chula Vista Police Traffic Division will be continuing to investigate this incident.
