Winter Weather Keeps Troopers Busy Around the State

Winter Weather Keeps Troopers Busy Around the State

Indianapolis, IN- The light mist and freezing rain that went through Indiana late last night and early this morning kept troopers working multiple traffic crashes and assisting stranded motorists.

The statewide calls for service activity report for the Indiana State Police between 10:00 p.m. last night and 10:00 a.m. this morning showed the following activity.

Property Damage Crashes: 345

Personal Injury Crashes: 52

Fatal Crashes: 04
(Two of the fatal crashes were in Marion County on I-65 and I-70)
Slide Offs: 139

Assisted Motorists: 100

Indiana State Police Vehicles Struck: 09

(No listed injuries on Indiana State Police car crashes)

Troopers are currently removing vehicles that have been abandoned in the roadway and due to the possibility of more bad weather this evening they will be removing abandoned vehicles on the emergency shoulder in the Indianapolis metro area. Abandoned vehicles on the emergency shoulders need to be removed as they present further hazards during snow and ice conditions. Removal of these vehicles also allow INDOT workers to properly plow and treat the roadways with abrasives.

With the forecast of plunging temperatures later tonight, and the possibility of more precipitation, motorists are encouraged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.  Untreated roadways are expected to freeze and will become slick and hazardous. Remember, bridges and overpasses freeze first and will often times catch the unsuspecting motorists off guard.

If you are involved in a minor crash Indiana law requires you to move to a safe area and exchange information with the other involved person.  State police and other law enforcement agencies are responding to crashes with injuries and road blockage as a first priority and are unable to respond to property damage crashes during extreme weather conditions.
