ISP Arrests Suspect in Previous Shooting of Cloverdale Police Officer
 
Putnam County—Late this afternoon, Indiana State Police detectives served a Putnam County arrest warrant on 48-year-old Jeffrey P. Hunter of rural Putnam County following his release from an Indianapolis hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment since the shooting.
 
Jeffrey P. Hunter was incarcerated in the Putnam County Jail on preliminary charges of Attempted Murder, Level 1 felony; Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle, Level 6 felony; Battery (misdemeanor); and Theft (misdemeanor).
 
Jeffrey P. Hunter is the suspect in an alleged theft from the Tractor Supply Store in Greencastle, Indiana on December 10, 2016. Greencastle police officers and Putnam County sheriff’s deputies developed information that led them to the suspect’s residence at 4449 East County Road 375 South near Greencastle. Officers confronted Jeffrey P. Hunter at the front door of his residence and Hunter allegedly discharged a shotgun toward the officers striking Cloverdale Police Officer Luke Brown in the chest. Officer Brown returned fire from his service weapon and struck Hunter in the abdomen area. Officer Brown then performed medical aid on Hunter until arrival of Putnam County Operation Life Paramedics. CPD Officer Luke Brown was wearing a ballistic proof vest at the time of the shooting.
 
The lead investigative agency was the Indiana State Police with lead investigators being Don Curtis and First Sergeant Jason Fajt.  Assisting were the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Putnam County Prosecutor’s Office, Greencastle Police Department, and the Cloverdale Police Department.

No other information will be released and there is no information at this time on an initial court appearance date and time.
 
Under the Law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
